OpenVPN configs: what they are and how to use them
An .ovpn file is a text-based connection profile for an OpenVPN client. It contains the server address, transport, encryption settings and, in these public profiles, embedded certificates and a client key. It is not an app or proof that the server is safe.
Download and import
- Install the client for your platform from the official OpenVPN Connect source.
- Choose a country in the .ovpn catalogue. Countries are reported by the source; we have not verified geolocation.
- Download the file and use the client’s file-import option. For iOS, see the same-iPhone guide.
- Confirm adding the VPN and try connecting. If it fails, choose another file. This catalogue does not currently test availability.
TCP and UDP
Both options in this catalogue are OpenVPN. TCP uses a transport with delivery acknowledgements; UDP does not. We cannot predict which will be available or faster on your network. The filter shows only the transport actually present in the original profile; we do not generate missing UDP profiles from TCP.
What “untested” means
The parser permits only a limited set of directives and a public server IP address. It rejects script-execution commands, plugins, external files and unexpected parameters. This is not cryptographic certificate verification, an import test or a tunnel test.
Security and errors
Original files may use outdated AES-CBC and SHA1. Modern clients may reject them. Do not disable client protections: choose another profile instead. Do not upload other people’s private configs containing keys or share your own keys with public catalogues.
A public VPN is operated by a third-party volunteer. The operator sees your original IP and may observe connection metadata; unencrypted traffic is also not protected from the operator. Use HTTPS. Do not treat a VPN as a guarantee of anonymity, no logging or protection from every threat.
