How to open .ovpn on the same iPhone
No computer is needed: download the file in Safari and import it into OpenVPN Connect using Files.
- Install OpenVPN Connect from the App Store. Check that the publisher is OpenVPN Inc.
- Open the catalogue in Safari, choose a country and tap “Download .ovpn”. If the browser asks for confirmation, choose “Download”.
- Open Safari downloads or Files → Browse → iCloud Drive or On My iPhone → Downloads. The folder depends on your Safari settings.
- Touch and hold the .ovpn file → Share → OpenVPN / OpenVPN Connect. If the app is not listed, open More. Alternatively, choose file import in OpenVPN Connect and locate the download using the system file picker. Menu labels vary by version.
- Confirm adding the profile (Add) in OpenVPN Connect. If iOS prompts you, allow the VPN configuration to be added. Do not install separate device-management profiles or unknown root certificates.
- Turn on the profile. Importing it does not mean the server is available. Connections here have not been tested.
If the file will not open
Check that the extension is .ovpn, not .ovpn.txt. If you see text, save the original file to Files and use Share. Do not paste the config into notes: that may change its contents.
If it will not connect
The server may go offline, your network provider may block the connection, or the app may reject outdated cryptography. Try another file from the catalogue. Do not disable certificate verification or weaken security settings to connect. We do not promise that every original file is compatible with every client version.
If the app asks for credentials, consult the official VPN Gate instructions; do not enter your Apple ID password. To disconnect, use the switch in OpenVPN Connect.
